As a self proclaimed fashionista, one may think that I am daring with style. Yes, I do indulge in the casual fur vest, and unconventional hat or patterned legging from time to time, but when it comes to being daring in the sense of color, that I do not see myself as.
You see, my love for the absence of all color, and all things black, gray, and navy may stem from my fear of bright colors, or just from my innermost need to belong to the culture that is New York City. Anyway, this past season, colors have been gracing the runway with effortlessly chic displays of coral, vibrant crimsons, and jewel-tones that are almost as decadent as the real things. Now, being a lover of all things fashion, but also a lover of neutral hues I was conflicted in my efforts to explore the pop-of-color trend that was taking over the runways and taking over my college campus.
First step-purchase jeans. I went with the BDG mid-rise skinny jeans from Urban Outfitters. Yes I purchased them, and yes, they sat in my closet alongside the other items in the “wear this soon” section for almost two weeks. However, wear them soon I did not. I contemplated bringing them back, for my fear of bright on the bottom scared me, but I kept them. Instead, I introduced more color into my wardrobe in the forms of bright tops and scarves, with the thought of the red jeans lingering in the back of my mind.
I finally mustered up the courage to wear them out, with a simple oversized black top, a skinny black belt, brown riding boots, and a brown vest, my pop of color was not as dramatic as I had made it out to be. I felt great. The pants moved with ease, and my comfort blanket of dark clothing was still with me. I had mastered the trend and conquered my fear. I even purchased the pants in cobalt blue, teal…and black.
Now I have so many great ways to wear the jeans I have to plan out my outfits accordingly. I now have plans to add pops of color into my wardrobe every chance I get. From the fantastic yellow leather bag I purchased on a whim last year, to the orange cut out blouse I bought over the holiday season, color is a trend that is here to stay, at least for me!
Below are some of my favorite staple color pieces that can easily be incorporated into any closet.
